IMPORTANCE OF AGROCHEMICALS

Agrochecmicals

Kent Hall received a competitive grant from USDA and designed a new module that teaches the importance of agrochemicals and how they protect crops against insects, weeds, and diseases. The module consists of a four by five foot display that has a wheel mounted on it. This will allows the youth participants to spin the wheel. The wheel will stop on a category which correlates to a question the presenter will read to the group. Each correct response from the group will result in one of teams earning a point.

Around the wheel are pictures of watermelons at different stages of growth. The presenter describes each of these stages and how agrochemicals help the plant to a mature, ripe, ready to eat watermelons. Also, there are pictures of watermelons that have been destroyed by insects, diseases, and weed activity that were not treated by any type of agrochemical. The presenter can discuss what is happening in these pictures and would could have been done to prevent these problems.

If your county office would like to check out this module, please contact Jeff Howard.
